Parinda:

'Parinda', directed by Vidyuvinod Chopra, is a Bollywood trendsetter film. There are many reasons why Parinda, the popular film of the year in 1989, is still being discussed even after 32 years. The combination of professionalism and artistic aspect is the main reason for this.

Parinda is a story of love and conflict between Kisan and Karan, in which the story of crime and violence in Mumbai is linked. At the same time, the film has touched on the compulsions of the people and the weakness of the system.

Kisan is a character who has gone through crime and illegal ways while fighting poverty. He is involved in crime and sends his brother Karan to study in the United States. The story of the film moves forward from the context of Karan's return from America.

After returning to Mumbai, Karan is excited to meet his brother Kisan as well as his childhood friend Prakash and girlfriend Paro. Paro is Prakash's sister. The next day, Inspector Prakash is being assassinated by Mafia don Anna's men.

While Karan is visiting Prakash, Anna's man shoots Prakash. Karan is upset when his friend is killed in front of his eyes. Her pain is exacerbated when she realizes that her own brother, Kisan, is Anna's special person.

This incident leads to a rift in the ideal love and friendship of the brothers. The relationship between Karan and Paro also deteriorate. In this turbulent journey, stories of friendship, love, morality, crime, and revenge take a new turn and the film becomes more interesting.

Leading actors Jackie Shroff, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Anupam Kher, Suresh Oberoi, and others have played important roles in making this story come alive. Jackie and Anil Kapoor's chemistry as brothers and Nana Patekar's acting are the special aspects that keep the film interesting.

In the film, Nana Patekar has done an excellent job in the role of a deranged Don who is afraid of fire. Although it has been praised in some films before, it is Parinda who established Nana Patekar in Bollywood. He won National Award and Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for this role.

Jackie Shroff won the Best Actor award for his role as Kisan, ready to do anything to please his brother. The film won Filmfare Awards in five categories, including Best Director and Screenplay.

Filmed in real-time using limited resources, cinematographer Vinod Pradhan beautifully captures the beaches, streets, temples, and flying pigeons seen in the film. Film editor Renu Saluja also won the National Award for Editing.

Satya:

'Satya' has given a new height to director Ram Gopal Varma, who earned fame from the film 'Shiva' about underground crime.

What is special about this film is that it truly presents the lives of gangsters working in the Mumbai underworld. In this sense, it is a film about the private lives of gangsters.

JD Chakraborty is in the role of Satya in the film. He came to Mumbai in search of work and got a job in a dance bar. But, it is more difficult for him to avoid the thugs who come there to extort money than to work. Without any mistake, he has to face the goons again and again. Fearless, he cannot tolerate injustice. At the same time, he clashes with a ferocious gangster. He is brutally beaten and jailed for selling the girl. Inside the jail, he meets Viku Mahatre. Viku Mahatre realizes that Satya is innocent.

Satya, who does not even know about his parents, is lonely, less talkative, and rarely laughs. Viku doesn't take time to read the dissatisfaction and anger in his eyes. Viku is impressed by the truthful saying, 'Do not be afraid of death.' He helps Satya to be released from prison and arranges for him to be resettled.

In the midst of Mumbai's brutality, Satya feels like having a family after meeting Viku, his wife, and other friends of Viku's gang. After a while, Satya falls in love with Vidya, who lives in the same house.

Meanwhile, while working for Viku, Satya, who has a fearless and restrained nature, becomes a powerful name in the underworld world. With his arrival, Viku Mahatre's dominance grows.

Becoming a gangster was not Satya's life plan. But this accidental journey becomes the destiny of truth.

Director Verma has powerfully narrated the story of this destiny of truth. 'Satya' is a film that introduces the city of Mumbai to the streets, poverty, crowds of people, the waves of the sea, and the love of the characters.

Filmed in the rainy season, the depiction of rain scenes has added a different beauty.

In 1998, Satya won six Filmfare Awards in three categories. For Manoj Bajpayee, who played a small role in a few films before Satya, the role of Viku Mahatre became a turning point in his career.

Urmila Matondkar, who became Satya's girlfriend, Saurabh Shukla, who became Kallu's uncle, Shefali Sah, who played Viku's wife, and other supporting actors have acted in the film.

Written by Saurabh Shukla and Anurag Kashyap, Satya's screenplay, cinematography, editing, and music have made the film standard. The film has music by Vishal Bhardwaj in Gulzar's words.

 

Apaharan:

Another popular film is 'Apaharan' by director Prakash Jha and actor Ajay Devgan, who have collaborated in films like 'Gangajal', 'Arakshyan' and 'Rajaniti'. Director Jha's film, which explores contemporary politics and crime, also hints at the story of a crime from its name.

 In the film, Ajay Devgan plays the role of Ajay Shastri, who dreams of becoming a police officer. Despite his good education, he has no other choice but to pay a bribe of Rs 500,000 to a government official to get his name out. Him father Raghuvanshi Shastri's doctrine becomes an obstacle in this decision. Amidst the frustration of his father not helping him, Ajay has another problem - repaying a loan taken to bribe a government official.

 As the pressure of repaying a loan of the lender, he sees no choice but to kidnap people and demand a ransom. It embarrasses him from home, law, and criminals from all sides. The story of the Apaharan, which won the National Award for a smart screenplay.

 The film stars Ajay, Nana Patekar, Yashpal Sharma, Mohan Agase, Pankaj Tripathi, Bipasha Basu, Ayub Khan among others. Nana Patekar's performance in the negative role is special. He won a Filmfare Award for his role as Tarvez Alam. Prakash Jha, Manoj Tyagi , and Shridhar Raghavan were given National Award for the screenplay of the film.
