Films based on crime
stories are popular all over the world. Popular films like 'The Godfather,
'Godfather', 'City of God', 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Gangs of Wassepur' are based on
crime stories. Recently, Indian web series like 'Mirzapur', 'Delhi Crime' and
'Asura' based on crime stories has been liked by many.
Such crime stories,
which cover aspects such as the psychology of criminals, the relationship
between crime and politics, the efforts of the police and the institutional
weaknesses of the system, have been entertaining as well as portraying the
problems within the society.
Such aspects can be seen
in the three films selected here. In these films, how a person or a group falls
into the cycle of crime within the system is shown from different angles. Apart
from the subject and characters, these films have also gained popularity in the
field of cinema in terms of style and craft of storytelling.
'Parinda', directed by
Vidyuvinod Chopra, is a Bollywood trendsetter film. There are many reasons why
Parinda, the popular film of the year in 1989, is still being discussed even
after 32 years. The combination of professionalism and artistic aspect is the
main reason for this.
Parinda is a story of
love and conflict between Kisan and Karan, in which the story of crime and
violence in Mumbai is linked. At the same time, the film has touched on the
compulsions of the people and the weakness of the system.
Kisan is a character who
has gone through crime and illegal ways while fighting poverty. He is involved
in crime and sends his brother Karan to study in the United States. The story
of the film moves forward from the context of Karan's return from America.
After returning to
Mumbai, Karan is excited to meet his brother Kisan as well as his childhood
friend Prakash and girlfriend Paro. Paro is Prakash's sister. The next day,
Inspector Prakash is being assassinated by Mafia don Anna's men.
While Karan is visiting
Prakash, Anna's man shoots Prakash. Karan is upset when his friend is killed in
front of his eyes. Her pain is exacerbated when she realizes that her own
brother, Kisan, is Anna's special person.
This incident leads to a rift in the ideal love and friendship of the brothers. The relationship between Karan and Paro also deteriorate. In this turbulent journey, stories of friendship, love, morality, crime, and revenge take a new turn and the film becomes more interesting.
Leading actors Jackie
Shroff, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Anupam Kher, Suresh Oberoi,
and others have played important roles in making this story come alive. Jackie
and Anil Kapoor's chemistry as brothers and Nana Patekar's acting are the
special aspects that keep the film interesting.
In the film, Nana
Patekar has done an excellent job in the role of a deranged Don who is afraid
of fire. Although it has been praised in some films before, it is Parinda who
established Nana Patekar in Bollywood. He won National Award and Filmfare Award
for Best Supporting Actor for this role.
Jackie Shroff won the
Best Actor award for his role as Kisan, ready to do anything to please his
brother. The film won Filmfare Awards in five categories, including Best
Director and Screenplay.
Filmed in real-time
using limited resources, cinematographer Vinod Pradhan beautifully captures the
beaches, streets, temples, and flying pigeons seen in the film. Film editor
Renu Saluja also won the National Award for Editing.
Parinda is also
characterized by the location chosen to depict the activities of the Mumbai
underworld and the use of natural light. The use of color combination and sound
in the film is equally powerful. Parinda's song 'Tumse Milke' is very popular.
The film, which has music by RD Burman, had Sanjay Leela Bhansali as its
assistant director.
'Satya' has given a new
height to director Ram Gopal Varma, who earned fame from the film 'Shiva' about
underground crime.
What is special about
this film is that it truly presents the lives of gangsters working in the
Mumbai underworld. In this sense, it is a film about the private lives of
gangsters.
JD Chakraborty is in the role of Satya in the film. He came to Mumbai in search of work and got a job in a dance bar. But, it is more difficult for him to avoid the thugs who come there to extort money than to work. Without any mistake, he has to face the goons again and again. Fearless, he cannot tolerate injustice. At the same time, he clashes with a ferocious gangster. He is brutally beaten and jailed for selling the girl. Inside the jail, he meets Viku Mahatre. Viku Mahatre realizes that Satya is innocent.
Satya, who does not even
know about his parents, is lonely, less talkative, and rarely laughs. Viku
doesn't take time to read the dissatisfaction and anger in his eyes. Viku is
impressed by the truthful saying, 'Do not be afraid of death.' He helps Satya
to be released from prison and arranges for him to be resettled.
In the midst of Mumbai's
brutality, Satya feels like having a family after meeting Viku, his wife, and
other friends of Viku's gang. After a while, Satya falls in love with Vidya,
who lives in the same house.
Meanwhile, while working
for Viku, Satya, who has a fearless and restrained nature, becomes a powerful
name in the underworld world. With his arrival, Viku Mahatre's dominance grows.
Becoming a gangster was
not Satya's life plan. But this accidental journey becomes the destiny of
truth.
Director Verma has powerfully narrated the story of this destiny of truth. 'Satya' is a film that introduces the city of Mumbai to the streets, poverty, crowds of people, the waves of the sea, and the love of the characters.
Filmed in the rainy
season, the depiction of rain scenes has added a different beauty.
In 1998, Satya won six
Filmfare Awards in three categories. For Manoj Bajpayee, who played a small
role in a few films before Satya, the role of Viku Mahatre became a turning
point in his career.
Urmila Matondkar, who
became Satya's girlfriend, Saurabh Shukla, who became Kallu's uncle, Shefali
Sah, who played Viku's wife, and other supporting actors have acted in the
film.
Written by Saurabh
Shukla and Anurag Kashyap, Satya's screenplay, cinematography, editing, and
music have made the film standard. The film has music by Vishal Bhardwaj in
Gulzar's words.
Another popular film is
'Apaharan' by director Prakash Jha and actor Ajay Devgan, who have collaborated
in films like 'Gangajal', 'Arakshyan' and 'Rajaniti'. Director Jha's film, which
explores contemporary politics and crime, also hints at the story of a crime from
its name.
